CAHME Rolling Out New Accreditation Standards for 2017 – 2018

stanowskianthony

Every four years, CAHME performs a comprehensive review of the criteria for accreditation. Our latest review was completed and approved by the CAHME Board in late 2016, after the CAHME Standards Council received input from program directors, students, employers, corporate members, and other stakeholders. Phase in of the new standards is underway and they will apply to programs beginning their self-study this fall. (Note that program site visits in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 will be under current standards.)

Some highlights of key changes in the eligibility standards and accreditation criteria include:

  • Clarification of criteria;
  • Using the term “health sector” to replace “healthcare system” as a reflection that health management extends beyond hospital walls;
  • Eligibility Standards, including expansion of competency assessment for program evaluation and quality improvement.

The full set of revise criteria is available on the CAHME web site and we are developing an updated Self Study Guide that will be available this summer.

The CAHME Boot Camp at the AUPHA Annual Meeting will be a great opportunity to learn more about the new standards, and we encourage you to attend.

Our work is not yet complete. In the next step, the Standards Council will revise the “Worksheet” of questions that site visitors use and that helps to guide Programs as they prepare their Self Study in advance of an accreditation visit.

For question about the standards, contact Eric Brichto, Director and Counsel, Accreditation Operations, at 301-298-1820 or ebrichto@cahme.org.
