CAHME Standards Council Update

stanowskianthonyI recently went to New York City, and saw the new transportation hub that serves the World Train Center, adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial.  Called “the Oculus”, the station was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to resemble a winged dove in flight.  The Oculus changes the transportation standards.  The composition, flow, security, signage, technology, and incorporation of retail and food services are lessons that architects designing other transportation hubs will need to incorporate in a post 9/11 world.

Last week, CAHME completed its initial stage in examining our education standards.  The Standards Council, chaired by Dan Zismer (Castling Partners), thoughtfully reviewed our current criteria, debated proposed changes, and critiqued the reasons for revisions.  Council members included a mix of academia and senior healthcare executives: Don Avery (Fairview Park Hospital), Brad Beauvais (Trinity University), Heidi Boerstler (University of Colorado Denver), Matt Brooks (Texas State University), Martin D’Cruz (Ascension Health/St Vincent Health), Pat Ketsche (Georgia State University), Jeffrey Kraut (Northwell Health), John Lowe (Simmons College), Sharon Schweikhart (Ohio State University), and Margaret (Peg) Van Bree (Hasbro Children’s Hospital).  Dan West (University of Scranton) participated as the CAHME Chair.  CAHME’s past CEO, Margaret Schulte provided the continuity from the work that began during her term.

For me, the give and take, debate and compromise, respect and thoughtfulness that occurred during the meetings was what makes CAHME special.  The work that this CAHME Community of Scholars are doing will result in a well-prepared healthcare management workforce. Like the design of the Oculus, the end product of the Council is based on a new healthcare and education environment.  However, unlike the Oculus, the revisions of the Standards Council will not be strikingly different, but built on the established competency-based standards.

Look for more information about the results of the Standards Council soon, including what this means for our programs.

CAHME’s Corporate Member ACHE Announces Career Resource Center for Students

stanowskianthony
The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) is one of CAHME’s founders, and has been a longtime supporter of promoting the profession of healthcare management and the importance of accreditation in graduate healthcare management education. I recently met with ACHE President Deborah Bowen and COO Liz Summy, who told me about some new development for students.

ACHE’s Career Resource Center supports healthcare management professionals in advancing their career.  This year, ACHE announced the introduction of CareerEDGE SE, a valuable career planning tool which includes a five-step framework for career success specially designed for Student Associates of ACHE.

Faculty from CAHME accredited programs should feel confident in pointing to ACHE as an essential resource to students as they plan their career.  Needless to say, ACHE reinforces the value of the CAHME accreditation standard, and acknowledges that CAHME accredited programs meet clear criteria related to curriculum content and design, faculty and university resources, and career development and progress of a program’s graduates.

CAHME thanks ACHE for their support and is proud of our long partnership in the ongoing development of the profession of healthcare management.

ROCKVILLE, Md., August 8, 2016 / CAHME — Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) have announced a national award program to recognize CAHME-accredited graduate education programs.

The CAHME-Baylor Scott & White Health Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement Education is the first national award program to acknowledge excellence in quality improvement education in graduate healthcare management education programs. The CAHME- Baylor Scott & White Health Award will provide the recipient program national recognition in Modern Healthcare and will be honored at the CAHME Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with the American College of Healthcare Executives Congress in Chicago.

“We are proud to collaborate with Baylor Scott & White Health, a national leader in providing quality healthcare, to recognize programs that excel in incorporating quality improvement education in their preparation of future health care leaders,” said Anthony Stanowski, President & CEO of CAHME.

“The Institute of Medicine in their transformational reports Crossing the Quality Chasm and To Err is Human provided the framework for the essential components for quality health care and documented the prevalence of medical errors. Only a limited number of educational programs provide training on quality improvement in health care and fully prepare future leaders in health care to govern and lead quality improvement initiatives impacting the care received by patient in our communities. Baylor Scott & White Health is honored to collaborate with CAHME to prepare our future leaders to deliver STEEEP® (Safe, Timely, Efficient, Efficient, Equitable and Patient-Centered) health care.” said David J. Ballard, Chief Quality Officer of Baylor Scott & White Health.

CAHME – Baylor Scott and White Health Award Program

CAHME and Baylor Scott & White Health Announce Award Program for Excellence in Quality Improvement Education.

With the Olympics beginning last Friday, we are reminded of how talent, hard work, dedication, a community, and commitment go into creating an Olympic athlete. The Olympics inspires us, not just because of winning performance, but because it holds a mirror to ourselves to remind us that we can be great within our own profession, within our own community, and with the help of others. Olympic athletes frequently talk about how they are part of “something bigger.” Similarly, CAHME programs are part of “something bigger.”

While not on the same world stage as the Olympics, CAHME created a series of awards that serves to hold up programs that are exceptional. These programs push themselves to be successful, in the same spirit as Olympic athletes.

This year, CAHME Awards expands to include the CAHME-Baylor Scott & White Health Award for Excellence in Quality Improvement Education. The goal of this award is to set benchmarks of excellence to inspire our students…our future healthcare leaders…to know the important role of systems and statistics, structure and organization, teamwork and individual perseverance… and in the words of Carl Couch, MD in “Accountable“, “to drive a sustained focus on and commitment to improvement in long-term health outcomes”. We are thankful to Baylor Scott & White Health for their support to make this happen.

Create Healthcare Leaders Who Can Create The Change Required for Healthcare

46aea257-b729-4d36-98ae-cb65e0dd0d551During the July 2016 AHA Health Forum Leadership Summit, I had the opportunity to spend some time at the “Top of the Hyatt” with my friends Kevin and Jackie Freiberg.  They are best known for authoring the 1995 groundbreaking book, “Nuts! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success.” Their latest book is called “Cause“, and it examines how to make a difference by serving a purpose far beyond the bottom line.
We talked about CAHME, and the Freibergs said, “CAHME is not about creating leaders who can work in a changed environment; it is rather about creating healthcare leaders who can create the change required for healthcare to meet the future needs of the communities served.”
This is a humbling task.  You accomplish it by working side-by-side to make each other better; CAHME is the conduit.  Program faculty and healthcare executives spent more than 105,000 volunteer hours last year on revising our standards, in accreditation council, on our board, on committees, and on site visits.  CAHME through our volunteers reinforces that working together as a community of scholars, we can make healthcare better by advancing the quality of healthcare management education.   That is our profession.  That is our cause.
I look forward to meeting our corporate members, healthcare organizations, sponsors, program faculty, and our students, as I continue to learn your perspective on the future of graduate healthcare management education.
Let me know what you think. I can be reached at astanowski@cahme.org, or at (301) 298-1825.
